Those wacky Bulbophyllums
Sep. 2nd, 2003 01:22 pmAnother strange and bizarre species orchid, Bulbophyllum lobbii. Huge flowers, compared to others in the genus. The flower is about 10 cm (4 inches) tall, and not quite that wide. In the pictures, the side petals are sort of curved around, but then straightened out in the next day or two. The first is the whole flower, the second is a close-up of the spots and stripes.

Interestingly enough, I had another Bulbophyllum doing something wierd, but the flowers dropped before I managed to take a picture. See, normally the flowers are on a tall stem, and new growths are on a short sturdy horizontal stem. But this one plant made a short, thick, horizontal stem, then flowers at the end. When they were still buds and slightly curvy, it looked for all the world like an arm with twisted fingers. Not sure what's up with that.
