Plant update
Nov. 10th, 2005 06:50 pmSo, I decided a while back that I really had too many plants. They didn't all fit on the shelving anymore, and I had been neglecting them a bit while finishing school because there just wasn't enough time for the care they all needed. And with my plans to get a job and maybe a life, I suspected I wasn't going to suddenly have more time to care for them in the future. So I did a census. Amazingly, I had about 175 plants, indoors and out. I decided that it wouldn't be unreasonable to get rid of the ones that weren't doing well, the ones I wasn't that excited to have, and the ones I didn't particularly care about. Fewer plants would mean more time to focus on the favorite plants I kept, which would end up being healthier and happier. I figured that reducing by about a third wouldn't be unreasonable. It would take me down to about 120 plants, which was still lots for variety and fun, but would eliminate a lot of the care. And it turned out not to be that hard to find homes for the plants I didn't want to keep. My target date was November. I just did another census and discovered I'm down to just over 100 plants, a couple of which are already earmarked for other homes. I found new homes for over 40% of them.
I think this is pretty cool. For one, in means I did get rid of the plants I wasn't that interested in. For another, it means I have some extra room to acquire more plants which I am interested in. :)
(And a mini-orchid update. Dendrobium kingianum finally bloomed for me! Little pink fragrant flowers! Naturally, I didn't manage to get a photo before they started looking worn. :( However, Maxillaria tenuifolia made a flower bud, and it opened today! This is the orchid that smells like fake coconut lotion, and I'm very excited that it's blooming. I've had it almost as long as the kingianum, and also no flowers. Woot! There will be photos.)
