XP or 7? I have several copies of XP laying around, but I don't know which once aren't installed somewhere (eg, I don't know which ones are technically legit). I can get you legit copies of 7 tho.
At least as of a couple of years ago, Microsoft would legally allow anyone to downgrade from Vista to XP (http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9040318/FAQ_Giving_up_on_Vista_Here_s_how_to_downgrade_to_XP) by choosing the 'activate by phone' option and explaining over the phone that the customer was downgrading.
No idea if you still can! But it might be worth a shot.
This is what I was going to say -- I believe she has a legal right to install XP as a "downgrade" (really upgrade) of her Vista license. If so, I have media I can burn (no keys required). Whether or not I can *find* it...
For the record, no one in seattle should pay retail for MS products. I'm sure you can find someone who works at MS or knows someone at MS if you need to buy a new copy. :-)
